Hello – if you got here googling Ridley’s book, The Rational Optimist –

Please also check out MY recent book, THE CASE FOR RATIONAL OPTIMISM, which makes similar points and arguments, but develops the case for optimism discussing a broader range of subjects. Click HERE for more information.

And welcome to my blog. I hope you like it too.

I find your blog quite challenging.

I watched your TV interview about the book. It seems to me that the difference between your book and Matt Ridley’s is that he is using the lens of evolutionary change as a context for the value of optimism. Your assumptions about the values that “we” are raised with and what we “know” of human nature are changing as I write! We have to take the long view of history to gain some perspective of our current reality. Reason for optimism? Absolutely! But it’s the perspective of deep time and evolution — way beyond yours or my lifetime and whatever generational values we were raised with — that makes it so apparent.

FSR REPLY: Peggy, thanks for your interest. Actually, that short interview hardly scratched the surface of my book, which discusses in some depth the human evolutionary background and how that evolution makes people far more good than bad.
